Dodgy vodka alert

Posted by news desk in Local News, 31st August 2008, 4:38pm

The Food Standards Agency has issued a 'food alert' to local authorities concerning counterfeit Spar Imperial Vodka.

The counterfeit vodka contains potentially harmful levels of methanol which could give serious health effects if consumed in large quantities.

So far none of the vodka, which has a hint of acetone smell similar to nail varnish, has been found in Hertfordshire but authorities have also come across it up the road in Islington and as far away as Northumbria.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning include nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness, blurred vision and breathing difficulties.  They can take several hours to develop so anyone who may have drunk this counterfeit product should seek immediate medical advice.

No counterfeit bottles have been found in any Spar stores and there are no concerns associated with authentic bottles of Spar Imperial Vodka therefore sale from via any other means should be deemed suspect.

Local residents with any information on this product should contact Environmental Health on 020 8207 7435 or Hertfordshire Trading Standards on 08454 040506.
